We sat down and talked about some selected medical photos of mine and it turned out pretty good, I think. Now I’ve finally gotten my hands on the recording, for your (Norwegian) listening pleasure.

The Sterile Eye turned four years on 11.11.11, and it passed me by! The last year haven’t been my most active in blogging, but I should have remembered that.

Merry christmas and a happy new year to all readers of The Sterile Eye.

The Sterile Eye turns three today and one year ago I switched from my job at Oncolex to the Institute of Clinical Medicine. It’s been an exciting year both in work and blogging.

I planned to do something a bit more creative for this blogiversary, but I simply couldn’t find the time. It was, however, nice to go through the archives and find out what really happened the last year. This is what:

1. I developed a new surgical procedure.
2. I discovered there was something called EB.
3. It took some time adapting to my new environment.
4. The videos from my old job became available as an iPhone App. (Now you can even download the lung cancer bit for free.)
5. I was admitted to a strange hospital in Latvia.
6. I pulled my act together and became a host.
7. I visited an old surgical building in Copenhagen.
8. I ran around in the forest for a long time.
9. I read a couple of very interesting books.
10. I did an interview with a talented anatomical painter.
11. I did not become a fashion photographer.
12. The Sterile Eye had its first ever guest post.

I’ll spend most of the summer away from internet connections, so there won’t be any posts for some weeks. Have the best of summers and shoot some nice photos!

Harvey Pekar, hospital file clerk and comic book creator was found dead yesterday.

Pekar is best known for his American Splendor series, but he also wrote one of the most gripping accounts of cancer I’ve ever read – the autobiographical Our Cancer Year.

This is a story about a year when someone was sick., about a time when it seemed that the rest of the world was sick, too. It’s a story about feeling powerless, and trying to do too much…

Thus starts the story of 1990, the year of the Gulf War and the year Harvey Pekar discovered he had lymphoma. Written by Pekar and his wife Joyce Brabner and illustrated by Frank Stack, the book is an honest account of the couples battle with cancer, chronicling everything from denial, through resignation and finally beating the disease. Their battle against cancer is contrasted with the Gulf War, as Brabner finds several of her Middle Eastern friends affected by the conflict.

Often grumpy and always acerbic, Pekar wrote about his own life and the lives of people he knew in his comics. Out Cancer Year is perhaps where he exposes his vulnerability the most, and the very human story shines through his surliness.

Rest in peace Harvey Pekar.
