This is the coolest piece of art I’ve seen in a long time! The Lego anatomy schematic is one of several brilliant anatomy designs by New York artist Jason Freeny. Details of the schematic can be viewed on his blog. High quality prints can be ordered here. I know I will!

While editing a video of an ERCP procedure, I noticed a familiar figure in the recording from the endoscope. Who’s filming who?

Gebrselassie & me

September 29, 2008 § 5 Comments

Only twice as fast as me.

Only twice as fast as me.

I usually don’t write about personal matters outside my professional arena, but I just have to mention this.

Yesterday I ran my first half marathon. I’ve been training for a long time, had some problems along the way, but in the end I was free of injuries and in top shape.

I finished in two hours, three minutes and fifty-eight seconds – 02:03:58.

Also yesterday, Haile Gebrselassie (photo credit), Ethiopian long distance superman, set a new world record in the marathon of two hours, three minutes and fifty-nine seconds – 02:03:59.

Which means I run (almost) exactly half as fast as a world record holder. Not bad :)

An English speaking reader sent me this question:

How do you pronounce “Øystein”?

English speakers tend to go for something like “Oisteen”, but here is the correct pronouncation:

Ø like the U in Urge.
Y like in Yeti.
ST like in STone.
EIN like in EINstein.

Øy-stein with pressure on the Y. Øystein is an old norse name, and the original meaning is lucky stone/stone amulet. Øystein I was king of Norway from 1103 to 1123.

Six word memoir

May 6, 2008 § 2 Comments

I was tagged by rlbates who was tagged by Midwife With a Knife for the six word memoir meme.

The instructions? Write a 6 word memior and tag 6 others. Leave a comment on the tagged blogs with an invitation to play.

rlbates – My life is full of stitches.

MWWAK’s – Catch a baby, watch the floor.

Scanman – Aiming for accuracy in grayscale images

And here’s mine:

Marveled at inner and outer landscapes

Which sums up my love for nature and anatomy, two important aspects of my life. Lots of other things are and have been important to me, but it’s simply impossible to distill them all into 6 words.

I really don’t like pushing stuff on others, but this somehow comes across as more meaningful than other memes. Makes you think. But as I’m running out of possible blogs to tag, I’ll break the rule and tag just these four: Øystein in Antarctica , Kariknapp, Jeffrey and makeminetrauma,

Surgical steel (well, metal anyway)

General Surgery Logo

Most people are not familiar with medical terminology. To some it’s just a lot of mumbo jumbo. To others it’s a source of horror.

The foremost purveyor of horror in music is death metal. Raging drums, ripping guitars and growling vocals all combine to create a dark and aggressive expression. Some bands choose to top this off with lyrics about war and destruction. Others feed off the shock effect of the prince of darkness. And some turn to medicine and surgery for help.

I’ll take you on a tour of some of the strangest choices of band name. Strange, that is, from a medical perspective. « Read the rest of this entry »
