This week one of the worst cases of retained surgical instruments in Norway was unraveled. A patient saw his five operations for colon cancer in a year turn to six, when it was discovered the surgeon had left behind a 20 cm long flexible sponge. The unique aspect of it however, was the patient’s reaction.

One-year Anniversary

November 11, 2008 § 6 Comments

The Sterile Eye has been around for exactly one year today!

During this year I’ve gotten to know a lot of other people in a universe I didn’t even know existed – the medical blogosphere. I’ve been contacted by medical photographers and others, seeking advice on different aspects of filming surgery. Patients have written to me about the fascination of watching the same operation as they went through. And I’ve had the honor of having some of my posts referenced by others. I thank you all for taking the time to visit. « Read the rest of this entry »

I work at a cancer hospital, and I’ve lost family members to cancer. On a usual workday this is not something I think about a lot, except that it adds an extra dimension to the work I’m doing. But sometimes, little things and moments can suddenly make me sad. « Read the rest of this entry »

Gebrselassie & me

September 29, 2008 § 5 Comments

Only twice as fast as me.

Only twice as fast as me.

I usually don’t write about personal matters outside my professional arena, but I just have to mention this.

Yesterday I ran my first half marathon. I’ve been training for a long time, had some problems along the way, but in the end I was free of injuries and in top shape.

I finished in two hours, three minutes and fifty-eight seconds – 02:03:58.

Also yesterday, Haile Gebrselassie (photo credit), Ethiopian long distance superman, set a new world record in the marathon of two hours, three minutes and fifty-nine seconds – 02:03:59.

Which means I run (almost) exactly half as fast as a world record holder. Not bad :)
